Iona Baseball Drops Non-Conference Game At Stony Brook

Jake Field homers in the loss

STONY BROOK, NY – The Iona College baseball program dropped a non-conference game to Stony Brook University on Tuesday afternoon, 9-4. Jake Field had two hits and a team-leading three runs batted in. Will Jennings scored a pair of runs from the number two hole.

GAME RECAP

The Maroon & Gold jumped ahead in the top of the first inning. Jennings walked in an eight pitch at-bat and was brought home by an RBI double to right center by Field. Sam Punzi followed it up with the single to right center, but the first-and-third threat was nullified by a double play.

Iona added two more runs on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning on a home run from Jake Field over the left field wall. The sophomore slugger has already tied his home run total from last season.

Stony Brook broke through in a big way in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Seawolves entered their frame trailing 4-0 after an RBI triple from Iona's Nick Forney drove home Derek Becker, but the lead was short lived. Stony Brook sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits. It could have been worse as they stranded a pair.

In the bottom of the fourth, Iona's Quentin Crudo came on to replace starter Chris Dodrill. Fairfield began with their scoring with a walk, home run, walk, stolen base and hit batter. Jason Antalek came in to tray and quell the damage. He got the Seawolves to ground into a fielder's choice, but straight singles put Stony Brook ahead 5-4. Their final run came on a bases loaded walk.

Stony Brook added on two more tallies in the bottom of the sixth inning with Evan Giordano hitting a solo home run and Brad Hipsley crossing the plate on a wild pitch. The Seawolves final run also came courtesy of wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Iona lost the game despite outhitting Stony Brook, 10-7.  The Seawolves took advantage of five batters being hit and eight free passes. The only Gael pitcher to record a strikeout was Dodrill with three. Antalek gets credited with the loss. Stony Brook's Ben Fero earns the winning decision.

The Seawolves turned four double plays against Iona.

Stony Brooks Giordano was the lone batter with more than one hit. Brett Paulsen had a team-leading two runs batted in and his first collegiate home run.
