Iona MSOC Falls in MAAC Home-Opener Against Canisius

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team lost 2-0 to Canisius in its conference home-opener on Saturday afternoon. Trailing by one late in the match, Iona was undone by an 89th minute goal from Dylan Rice.

Similar to the league opener on the road at Manhattan, the Gaels owned an advantage in shots, as well as shots on goal, in both halves. The Maroon & Gold were responsible for the first four tries towards goal, though only Mackic's were on net. William Howard stopped both shots from Mackic with relative ease.

Canisius had its first two shots in succession in the 24th and 25th minute of the match, which Zachary Nelson stopped. The second save led to a corner, which amounted to nothing for the visitors. The story of the first half would continue to be missed opportunities offensively, coupled with good play by the keepers on either side. Howard made four saves in the opening 45, while Nelson registered three of his own.

The second half would tell a different story, at least for the Gaels. Camil Azzam Ruiz had two tries on net to begin the final 45 that Howard stopped. A counter attack by the Griffs after the second shot by Azzam Ruiz led to a breakaway for Lachlan Beever. Jon Paul Fernandez raced back, making solid tackle attempts on two separate occasions as Beever tried to settle himself. Beever kept with the ball however, settling it and sending a shot past an extended Nelson to give Canisius the 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes after the opening goal, Johnny Tekie blasted a shot off the crossbar that came back into play and saw Beever miss the rebound just over the cage. Iona followed with four more shots on goal, and a multitude of tries towards net, including a set-piece shot attempt from Edu Calvo-Salinas that sailed just over the crossbar. None could beat Howard, and a goal by Matthew Spangler with 1:55 left on the clock would seal the deal.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Azzam Ruiz, Thiago Cagna and Lenworth Lopez finished with a match-high four shots. Azzam Ruiz, Calvo-Salinas and Lopez's three shots on net were team highs.
  • Howard's nine saves against were the second most by an opposing keeper this season, on the heels of Manhattan's 11 last week.
  • Iona was held scoreless for the first time since the season opener against Vermont.
  • Canisius earned its first win at Mazzella Field in nearly seven years. The Griffs' last win in New Rochelle came on October 11, 2014 before today's victory.
  • Iona is now 13-3-1 in its last 17 matchups against Canisius, postseason excluded.
