POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team prevailed over Marist on Wednesday night at Tenney Stadium, 3-2.
Camil Azzam Ruiz deposited two scores, including the game-winner, adding an assist for good measure in the road win for the Maroon & Gold.
Marist would break the ice in the early going, revving up the home crowd at Tenney Stadium. Skylar Conway put one away on a pass from Richard Morel to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. A little over two minutes later, Inigo Zaballa Gonzalez split a defender and Samuel Ilin on the Marist goal line to even the match at one. Azzam Ruiz placed a set piece pass from the corner perfectly inside the box for Zaballa Gonzalez, who finished the first of his career as a Gael.
Seven minutes later, Stefan Copetti gave Marist the advantage again. This time, Conway was the helper, assisting on the go-ahead goal for Copetti. The first-half shootout continued when Azzam Ruiz curled a right-footed shot past Ilin to knot the match at 2-2 with just over seven minutes left in the half.
Both defensive units took hold in half number two, defusing the offensive explosion that Tenney Stadium experienced in the opening 45 minutes. Play after play was made defensively, but the Gaels would be the ones to finally break through.
A foul just outside the box set up Azzam Ruiz for a set piece to the left of the 18. He proceeded to curl it up and around the wall of Red Fox defenders and past the diving Ilin, giving Iona the 3-2 lead in the 79th minute. Marist turned up the attack, searching desperately for an equalizer to force extra time. The Red Foxes had five corner kicks in the final five minutes of action, but Nelson made one huge stop and a try from Copetti missed just wide of the post. Iona emerged with a big result on the road, handing Marist it's first loss in league play.
