Head of the Charles Preview 2

Men's Rowing Jack Ravitz

Iona Rowing Returns to the 56th Head of the Charles For The First Time Since 2018

BOSTON, MA - What started as a single day competition for single scullers in 1964, it has evolved into a three day extravaganza attracting competitors from around the country and world. From youth rowers to Olympians to veterans of all ages, there is something for everyone at the Head of the Charles in a wide variety of boat classes. The three mile course, complete with its twists and turns and seven bridges to navigate, have challenged and thrilled thousands of rowers annually for generations. Tens of thousands of people will congregate on the banks of the Charles River to witness one of the country's more unique sporting events. This year 620 clubs are sending 2,239 entries to the river.

Like 2018, Iona again will be sending an entry in both the Men's and Women's Club Coxed Four event. 2021 Dad Vail silver medalist in the 1x, Oliver Sanchez, will be Iona's first ever single scull entry at the Head of the Charles in the Men's Club 1x.

Don't be fooled by the name of the event, "club". In all Club events the field is full of talent still in their racing prime after college as well as a slew of current Division 1 athletes.

An entry to the Head of the Charles is very competitive and many entry requests are denied. A strong performance in your race can guarantee your entry for next year. In the Club 4's, finishing in the top half of the field will earn an entry for 2022. In the Club 1x, finishing in the top quarter of the field will earn an entry for 2022. The remainder of the field is filled via random lottery.

Crews starting in the top half of fields are auto-qualifiers from the year before. Everyone else who gained entry via the lottery is placed in the back half of the lineup randomly. It is very difficult to win a head race from the back of the pack simply because the slower boats are in the back and if you're fast that means you have to get around them which actually slows you down in the end.
