Iona MSOC Outlasted By Niagara

LEWISTON, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team lost to Niagara 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field. A fifth-minute goal from Jelldrik Dallman accounted for all the scoring in the match.

Niagara opened the night with a pair of shots in the first two minutes of play, one of which was turned away by starting goalkeeper Juan Alfaro Monge. Dallman struck in the fifth minute, giving the Purple Eagles an early 1-0 advantage.

Iona followed the Niagara goal with a string of four shots in a span of 10 minutes. Niagara's Josh Savoni stopped tries on target from Camil Azzam Ruiz on two occasions, watching shots from Edu Calvo-Salinas and another from Azzam Ruiz miss. Later, in the 22nd minute, Jon Paul Fernandez had a shot up high that was handled by Savoni.

A late effort from Azzam Ruiz in the 37th minute was stopped, the last chance of the first half for the Gaels. Niagara's 1-0 advantage held as the two sides entered halftime. Iona's offensive pressure continued into the second half, seeing a pair of shots again from Azzam Ruiz be stopped by Savoni.

The relentlessness led to a penalty kick, taken by Azzam Ruiz, which missed. Missed opportunities would continue to plague Iona, as later on in the second half Azzam Ruiz watched a shot just miss off of the left post. Tries from Esad Mackic, Fernandez and Inigo Zaballa Gonzalez would all miss the target as the Maroon & Gold searched for the equalizer.

Last ditch efforts in the 88th and 90th minutes from Azzam Ruiz would not go, and Iona would fall on the road at Niagara, 1-0.
