DERBY, CT - The Iona College men's and women's rowing programs opened its 2021-22 season Saturday at the Housatonic River for the Head of the Housatonic. Although it was cloudy, conditions were calm with the Gaels partaking in three races on day, men's single, men's varsity four, and women's varsity four.

Men's Single
In the men's single race sophomore
Oliver Sanchez finished 10th in the open event. The field comprised current and former national champions and 2020 Olympic hopefuls.
Women's Varsity
With freshmen
Cara Donnelly,
Layne McDonald, and
Grace Barber making their debuts in the collegiate women's fours, Iona finished ninth out of 20 and secured a top half finish. Of the eight teams ahead of Iona, five were in the Ivy League. Senior
Erin O'Brien and junior
Gwyneth Sauter rounded out the group for Iona.
Men's Varsity 4+
In the collegiate men's fours, Iona finished seventh out of 15, also securing a top half finish. It was a tight race, Iona was only 15 seconds off the podium. The Gaels were propelled by freshman
Ethan Megal, sophomore
Hayden Skigen, junior Nickolas Karpov, and seniors
John Swanson and
Francis Acolitse in the race.
