NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's basketball team lost a back-and-forth battle to Fairfield on Wednesday evening, 63-56. After taking a 53-51 lead with five minutes remaining, the Gaels allowed the Stags to go on a 13-3 run and close things out at the Hynes Center.
GAME SUMMARY
The Gaels opened the night on a torrid pace, knocking down four straight shots after missing their first.
Juana Camilion,
Hannah King and
Olivia Vezaldenos all hit three-pointers, allowing Iona to jump out to an early 11-2 lead. The Maroon & Gold went cold however, missing its final four shots of the period. Fairfield scored 15 straight points, grabbing a 17-11 lead.
Vezaldenos put down another triple, ending the Stags' run and cutting into Iona's first deficit of the evening. Rachel Hakes answered with a trifecta of her own, the final basket of the opening stanza.
After surrendering the lead late in the first quarter, Iona could not get over the hump in the first half. Fairfield had a response for every single Iona basket, maintaining at least a four-point advantage and carrying a nine-point lead into the half.
The third quarter of action was much of the same for Iona.
Ketsia Athias got herself going in the third quarter, after not scoring a point in the first half. The junior from Brooklyn scored seven points in the first five minutes out of halftime. Still however, Iona could not get any closer than five points of the lead. Vezaldenos found the bottom of the net for her third three-pointer of the evening with a minute to play in the third period, making it a 46-42 game.
Finally, Iona started to click on both ends of the floor in the biggest moment of the game to that point. The Gaels limited the Stags to just one basket in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, stringing together three buckets of their own to re-take the lead. Vezaldeno's fourth triple of the night pushed Iona ahead, 51-50, with 6:23 to play.
Camilion scored just over a minute later, but it would be the final field goal of the night for the Maroon & Gold. Fairfield closed the game on a 13-3 run over the final five minutes of action, with six of those points coming from the free throw line. Iona's only three points during that span came via the charity stripe.
