NEW ROCHELLE, NY -
Justin Burkhamer of the Iona men's golf program and
Nicole Whitley of Iona women's soccer are named the Student Athletes of the Week.
NICOLE WHITLEY
Nicole Whitley scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to force the game against St. Peter's into overtime. Her first goal came at the 79 minute mark, to cut the Peacocks lead to one. With just :13 seconds left in the game the Gaels received a free kick opportunity and Whitley capitalized for her second of the day. The Gaels would go on to win in OT, 3-2 for their first win of the season. The grad-student and the rest of the team travel to the #1 seed Siena on Friday for the opening round of the MAAC postseason.
JUSTIN BURKHAMER
Justin Burkhamer led the Gaels to a top six finish at Connecticut Cup; as an individual the FL native finished as runner-up for his second runner up finish of the season. After being +5 after the second round the senior shot a tournament low final round 70 (-2) to move up 10 spots. Burkhamer and the golf team are back in action this Friday at the Hartford Tumble Brook Invite.
