NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Saint Peter's on Thursday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Prior to the match, the men's soccer program honored graduating seniors Albin Mazerkaj and
Enzo Sangiacomo.
MATCH SUMMARY
Originally scheduled as the season-opener, then postponed and eventually rescheduled as the regular-season finale, Iona and Saint Peter's duked it out for 110 minutes in a rematch of the 2019 MAAC Championship game.
The Peacocks had the offense churning early, sending three shots towards rookie goalkeeper
Azal Dottin in the opening seven minutes of play.
Josh Plimpton, making his first start since Iona hosted Monmouth on March 21, tried his luck early on but missed.
Jon Paul Fernandez one-timed a shot from distance off of Iona's first corner kick of the afternoon, but watched as it sailed wide of the cage.
Neither keeper was forced to make a save until the 40th minute. The Peacocks' Robbie Anderson tried, but could not stop
Lenworth Lopez; his shot bounced past the keeper and into the back of the net, giving the Gaels a 1-0 lead with five minutes to play in the first half. The physicality picked up at that point, leading to four yellow cards being assessed across the final three minutes of the half.
Out of the half, Saint Peter's had a few prime chances at finding an equalizer. Both Tom Coulson and Jamie Davis found woodwork with their shots, Coulson on the left side and Davis on the right. Dottin also managed to make a pair of saves on shots by Dominic Laws, his only two stops of the afternoon.
Saint Peter's offense finally broke through in the 84th minute when Jordan Jowers crossed a ball into the box that Davis headed home, tying the match at one apiece. The cross from Jowers off of the corner kick was perfectly placed up near the crossbar and Davis went high off the ground to head it up and over Dottin.
Then, with less than three minutes remaining in regulation Iona was awarded a penalty kick. Saint Peter's Anderson was called for a foul in the box, assessed a yellow and now faced Lopez with the game on the line. Lopez guessed right, Anderson did not, but the shot off the right foot of Lopez missed wide right out of bounds. The match would head to overtime to try and decide a winner.
The first overtime period featured just one shot, by
Esad Mackic, which was blocked. Overtime period number two saw some decent chances for Iona, but two of those were blown dead after fouls were called on Plimpton inside the box. The clock struck zeros in the final period of the match and the two teams played to a 1-1 draw on senior day at Mazzella Field in the final tune-up before postseason play.
