POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College volleyball team fell in four sets to Marist (19-25, 16-25, 25-20, 25-27) on Sunday afternoon. The Gaels fought back to win the third set and even had a chance to force a fifth set, but couldn't hold off the Red Foxes in the end. Sophomore
Emma Jacobs led the Gaels, posting a season-high 14 kills on a .500 hitting percentage.
The final contest of Iona's weekend road trip began with Marist taking the opening set, 25-19. Marist used an 8-2 run, propelling them in the set, which started when the set was tied at 14. Jordan Newblatt added five of her game-high 20 kills for Marist in the first set, while Iona had five different players with kills.
Set two the Red Foxes took control early, jumping out in front 6-1 forcing Iona to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Gaels collected themselves with three straight kills, with two coming from Junior
Fleur Wiersma and another from sophomore
Jen Soto. Marist managed to stay in front and never trailed in set two, posting a match-best .300 hitting percentage. Unfortunately for the Gaels, Marist took advantage of a match-low .121 and closed out the second set 25-16, on an ace from Kendall O'Brien.
In a back-and-forth third set the Maroon & Gold put together a valiant effort to take control late in the frame. A pivotal 7-1 run propelled Iona and proved to be the difference maker, with Iona winning 25-20. Tied at 19, the Gaels put together four straight kills, from Soto, Jacobs and two from senior
Alessandra Brady. Iona posted its match-high in kills with 18 and a .400 hitting percentage as they closed out the set on an attack error from Marist to draw closer in the match.
Marist seized control early in the fourth set, jumping out to a 12-6 advantage. However, Iona stormed back, going on a 7-0 run to take the lead 13-12, forcing Marist to burn a timeout. From there it was neck-and-neck with neither team leading by more then three points the rest of the set. Down the stretch Iona stood tall fighting off match point thanks to a clutch kill from Soto, giving her 12 on the afternoon. Shortly after, Iona had a chance to win the set up 25-24, but two clutch kills and a block from Newblatt helped Marist seal the deal, winning the set 27-25 and closing out the match.
Senior
Cassandra Patsos finished with 13 kills on 9 digs while Wiersma chipped in a season-high 10 kills in the losing effort. Sophomore
Hope Matschner was two off from her season-high with 21 digs, and junior
Samantha Juran for the second straight game handed out a team-high 39 assist.

Iona returns to the Hynes Center next weekend for two games starting Saturday, October 2 against Canisius at noon.
