Iona MSOC Plays to 1-1 Draw at Manhattan

RIVERDALE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in the conference opener against Manhattan on Wednesday at Gaelic Park. Alessio Hernandez scored for the second consecutive match, but an 89th minute goal allowed the Jaspers to escape with the tie.

Manhattan had the early chances in the match, a pair of shots that did not test starting goalkeeper Zachary Nelson. Hernandez located Iona's initial shot on target in the match, forcing keeper Danny DiMarco to make a save in the 19th minute.

A foul led to a penalty kick try for the Jaspers just over 25 minutes in. Iona collectively breathed a sigh of relief as the PK missed everything. Iona made it hurt when Hernandez finished a feed from Tim Timchenko, who crossed the ball into the box after receiving the throw-in from Christian Geddes.

The Gaels immediately looked for another, but tries by Lenworth Lopez and Esad Mackic in the ensuing moments were turned away by DiMarco. The Manhattan goalie stopped one final try from Mackic in the final two minutes, sending the match to halftime with Iona in front, 1-0.

After combining for 14 shots in the opening half, neither side slowed down. In fact, the two teams picked up the pace offensively, combining for 19 shots in the second half. Ultimately, Manhattan would boast two of the most important of the 19 total. Karl Gelbjerg's initial shot led to a rebound, which Yasin Choukri buried to level the score with a little over a minute remaining in regulation.

As they did in the first two halves, the Gaels owned the edge in shots in both overtime periods. Manhattan had just one, the final one, which sailed wide left. DiMarco made 10 saves in regulation and then two more in the first overtime period. Despite the advantage in nearly every statistical category, Iona walked away with just one point following the 1-1 draw.
