Iona MSOC Remains Unbeaten After Draw at Siena

LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw on the road at Siena on Saturday afternoon. With the result, Iona remains unbeaten to begin conference play, moving to 3-0-4 in league play.

MATCH SUMMARY

Iona tested Siena's Greg Monroe twice in the early going, seeing shots by Frederik Johnson Oee and Elird Mero stopped in the first seven minutes of action. The Gaels had six more shot attempts over the final 38 minutes of the half, all of which were blocked or missed the target. Iona's Juan Alfaro Monge was not tested in the first half, idly watching as both of Siena's shot attempts sailed wide.

Matias Morales and Edu Calvo-Salinas both missed high to open the second half for Iona, while Siena's Erik Reis had his shot also miss above the crossbar. Monroe stopped tries from Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez, Jose Silva and Morales down the stretch to keep Iona off the board. Late tries on free kicks led to great chances in front of the net for Siena, but on both occasions the pass was just slightly too long, allowing Monge to clear the danger. Solid defensive play on both sides led to the scoreless draw.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona's offense owned a 21-5 advantage in shots, as well as a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Gaels' unbeaten streak has now reached eight matches, dating back to the final non-conference match, a scoreless draw with Columbia on September 24.
  • Monge was not forced to make a save in the contest, earning his fourth shutout of the season. Three of his four clean sheets this year have been in scoreless draws.
  • Seven different Iona attackers finished with multiple shots, led by Calvo-Salinas' match-high four shots.
  • Siena's five total shots are the least registered by an Iona opponent since Sacred Heart had just three on September 22, 2021. The five shots are a low mark for a MAAC opponent since the Gaels limited the Saints to three on April 3, 2021.
  • The Maroon & Gold are now 15-8-3 all-time against Siena. The Gaels have won five of the last six and eight of the last nine over the Saints.

  • Manhattan 3 - Canisius 1
