NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's basketball team defeated Wagner, 87-62, on Thursday night at the Hynes Center. Four different Gaels scored in double-figures, led by a career-best 18 points from
Thoranna Hodge-Carr.
THE RUNDOWN
From the opening tip until the final horn, Iona dominated Wagner in every facet of the game. The Gaels built up a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter, highlighted by a 17-0 run across the final seven-plus minutes of action. A Judith Gomez trifecta opened the second quarter and made it 20 straight points for the Maroon & Gold. Iona's lead grew to 25 points at the half, building a 41-25 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Iona led by as many as 32 points in the third quarter and allowed Wagner to cut the deficit below 20 points for a little over one minute in the second half. The Gaels cruised to the 25-point victory to tip off the 2022-23 season.
STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Hodge-Carr paced all scorers with 18 points. Camilion and Hodge-Carr each knocked down seven field goals.
- Isabelle Lipinski grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Kem Nwabudu also notched seven boards.
- Ketsia Athias dished out a career-best eight assists.
- Lipinski's two blocks and Gomez's four steals were team highs.
TEAM STATS
- Iona outshot Wagner 56.7% - 40.3% from the floor and 47.4% - 14.3% from three-point range.
- Wagner held a narrow 36-35 edge on the glass. Iona finished with 20 assists, compared to Wagner's 16.
- The Gaels forced the Seahawks into 22 turnovers, converting them into 27 points. 46 of Iona's 87 points came inside the painted area.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Iona's 87 points scored are the team's most since scoring 89 in a WNIT loss at home to Harvard on March 20, 2014.
- The Gaels have now won six straight over the Seahawks and seven of the last eight meetings. Iona improves to 13-4 all-time against Wagner after tonight's victory.
- The Maroon & Gold have now won back-to-back season openers and improved to 6-4 in season openers under head coach Billi Chambers.
