Iona MSOC Falls at Saint Peter's in Regular-Season Finale

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona University men's soccer team fell on the road, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. Camil Azzam Ruiz scored his sixth goal of the season in the loss, which cemented Iona into the No. 2 spot in the 2022 MAAC Championship.

MATCH SUMMARY

After a slow-paced start at Jaroschak Field, with stoppages from the officials, things began to pick up, though neither side found a goal. Iona's defense again shined, limiting the Peacocks to just one shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes. The Gaels registered 10 shots, forcing Saint Peter's goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho to make three saves.

Azzam Ruiz would finally open the scoring, finding the back of the net in the 56th minute. The goal was his sixth of the year and his fourth in his last three matches. Less than eight minutes later, Saint Peter's found the equalizer courtesy of Mikkel Fodstad.

Earlier in the match, Iona's Thiago Cagna was taken down in the box as he raced towards net, but the play had been called offside and amounted to nothing more for the Maroon & Gold. Saint Peter's would be the benefactor of a penalty kick in the 68th minute. Juan Alfaro Monge came up huge for Iona, stopping the PK try. He was forced to face one more after the rebound and ensuing scramble in front of him led to another foul against Iona in the box. Monge again made the stop, but the ball bounded out towards Reiss Skeen, who buried the shot and put the Peacocks in front.

Vying for an equalizer, Iona had one true chance late on a cross that Kendell Thomas headed just over the crossbar. Unfortunately for the Gaels, who had a chance at securing the MAAC Regular Season Championship due to Quinnipiac's loss, time ran out on their comeback attempt in Jersey City.
