Dominant First Half Sends Iona WBB Past LIU

BROOKLYN, NY - The Iona University women's basketball team defeated LIU, 64-55, on Monday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center. Thoranna Hodge-Carr poured in a career-best 21 points and Ketsia Athias registered her first double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds) of the season in the victory.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona controlled the game from the opening tip, despite the close finish. Iona led for all but 41 seconds, including a 25-point lead early in the second half. The Sharks managed just 13 first-half points, but used a strong second half to close the gap and make the contest seem closer than it appeared.

Judith Gomez's basket to begin the second half opened up a 25-point lead for Iona. LIU trimmed that deficit down to 15 points late in the third quarter, but a coast-to-coast, buzzer-beating lay-in by Hodge-Carr padded Iona's lead to 17 points heading into the final stanza.

The Sharks circled back and found themselves within single-digits of Iona, but some solid free-throw shooting from the Maroon & Gold held off the late push from LIU. Iona's first-half dominance proved to be the difference in the nearly wire-to-wire victory in Brooklyn.

STATISTICAL LEADERS

  • Hodge-Carr's 21 points and 10 made field goals were new career highs and marked the first time she has reached the 20-point plateau as a scorer. During her three seasons in the Maroon & Gold, the Gaels are undefeated (X-0) in games where Hodge-Carr scores in double figures.
  • Athias followed right behind, registering 18 points and pulling down 12 boards to notch the XXth double-double of her Iona career. She added a team-leading five assists and swatted the lone shot of the night for the Gaels.

TEAM STATS

  • As a unit, the Gaels shot 48.2 percent from the field in the victory, including a 58.2 percent mark from the floor in the first half. Iona has shot better than 45 percent in five of its seven games this season, emerging victorious in four of those five.
  • Iona's limited LIU to 13 first-half points and a field goal percentage of 33.9 overall, both of which were season lows for an Iona opponent.
  • The Gaels led for 39:19 of a possible 40 minutes. LIU held an advantage in the scoring column for a mere 35 seconds. Iona enjoyed the largest lead of the night, 25 points, during the third quarter. The Gaels also managed a 17-0 run that coincided with the 25-point third quarter lead.
  • Iona's 38 rebounds were a season high for the team, as were the Gaels' 12 made free throws.

THE OPPONENT

  • Emaia O'Brien carried the load for LIU, scoring 18 points on 6-15 shooting.
  • Zoee Hache dished out a game-high six assists for the Sharks.
  • Former Iona guard Shyan Mwai, 39th on Iona's all-time scoring list, played a little over 16 minutes and totaled four points and added three assists.
