LEXINGTON, VA– Iona women's water polo winning streak comes to an end after dropping a tough one to La Salle, 15-14. Today's game was the opening day for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Gaels led heading into the final quarter but a strong offensive attack by La Salle proved to be the difference in this one, Iona was outscored 5-1 in the fourth. 

Graduate Student Jordan van Reeken led the offense for the Maroon and Gold with four goals. Freshman Mary Jane Bailey started and played all 32 minutes for the Gaels . She made five saves on the day. The Gaels went 2-2 in sprints, winning the first and third quarter.  

Through the first eight minutes the score was kept close but a later first period goal gave the opponent a one goal lead, 4-3, entering the second quarter. The Maroon & Gold's offense out scored the Explores 5-2 in the second to reclaim the lead 8-6. Iona put up another five goal quarter and once again out scored La Salle by a goal. 

The Gaels entered the final frame with a 13-10 advantage, La Salle would go on to score five unanswered goals to take a 15-13 lead with 1:37 left to play. Wydan would find the back of the net with seconds left but the comeback would be too late.

The Maroon and Gold are back in action tomorrow with two games, one against Villanova and one against the host team this weekend, VMI. Both games can be watched on ESPN+.
