Iona Water Polo Falls to Wagner

STATEN ISLAND,NY - After leading 4-2 early in the second period, the Iona women's water polo team gave up seven straight scores to first-place Wagner College in a 20-10 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference road loss this afternoon. 

GAME SUMMARY

Graduate student Jordan van Reeken led the Maroon and Gold with four goals on six shots, while sophomore Kaya Hart scored three on five shots. Graduate student Danielle Hernandez, graduate student Laura Rockett and freshman Allison Collins had one goal each. The Gaels scored ten goals on 24 shots and made five assists with two from van Reeken.

In goal, freshman Mary Jane Bailey [saves and Wagner shots unavailable] made one steal with ten goals against in the second and fourth quarters.  Sophomore Lilly Morris [saves and Wagner shots unavailable] made one steal with five goals against in the first and third quarters. 

On defense, Iona made seven steals with two each by van Reeken and Hart, including one after Wagner won the opening swimoff, and blocked four Seahawks shots with two by van Reeken. Iona drew eleven Wagner kickouts with four by van Reeken and three by Hernandez, while being ejected 14 times. The Gaels turned the ball over 13 times.  Iona scored one goal on 14 man-up chances, while the Seahawks scored three goals on nine man-up opportunities.

With 1:44 gone in the match, Hernandez got the Gaels on the board first for a 1-0 lead. Hart's goal with 2:23 left in the first period put Iona up two 2-0.  Wagner finally answered with 1:03 left to slice the Gaels margin back to one 2-1.   With 24 ticks left, van Reeken upped the Gaels back to two 3-1 going into the second period.

Following a Wagner score 17 seconds into the second quarter, Hart's second goal put Iona up two 4-2 with 6:45 left.  Six straight home scores in the next 6:30 tied the game at four, then gave Wagner a four-goal 8-4 halftime edge.
Wagner continued its 7-0 run into the third period with a goal at 4:23 for a 9-4 cushion. Van Reeken's five-meter penalty goal ended the Iona offensive drought and cut the home lead back to four 9-5 just 19 seconds later.  In the closing two minutes, the Seahawks tacked on four more shallow-end goals for a 13-5 advantage going into the final period.

Rockett's goal just 36 ticks into fourth quarter got the Gaels back within seven 13-6, but two consecutive Seahawks scores in the next 1:13 gave the home squad a 15-9 lead with 6:09 remaining. Iona answered with two straight goals from Hart and van Reeken to cut the Wagner lead back to seven 15-8 at the 4:12 mark. After two more Seahawks scores, van Reeken's fourth goal got the Gaels back within eight 17-9 with 2:33 left. Thirty-two seconds later, Collins skipped a five-meter penalty shot into the net, but the Iona rally fell short as Wagner tacked on two more goals to seal the win.

The team's co-captains praised the "total team effort" from the entire squad against the first-place Seahawks. "We played a really hard-fought game and it was nice to see everybody put yesterday behind us," van Reeken said, referring to Saturday's losses to Villanova and LaSalle that ended the team's post-season hopes." "I think that the team really came together today," Rockett added. "We won the first and fourth quarter against the top team in the MAAC in a total team effort."

UP NEXT

On Friday, the Gaels travel to Brooklyn for a 11 a.m. match against St. Francis College and a 7 p.m. match against Long Island University.   On Saturday, Iona wraps up its regular season with a 3 p.m. game at Siena College in Loudonville, NY.
