SARATOGA, NY - The men's and women's rowing programs traveled to Saratoga Springs for the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships today. It has been thirteen years since Iona's last appearance at this event and their return did not disappoint as the program earned three medals and solid performances amongst the rest of the squad.
RACE SUMMARY
The freshman/novice women's eight won Iona's first medal of the day, a silver. A strong crew from West Point took the gold with Iona crossing the finish line 2.9 seconds ahead of Ithaca College to round out the medals.
The freshman/novice men's four also won a silver medal just 2.3 seconds behind the winning crew from West Point. The two crews raced each other hard over the 2000m course creating a lot of separation between them and the bronze medal crew from the Merchant Marine Academy.
Iona's lone victory on the day was a gold medal performance in the men's varsity four. The crew, led by senior stroke man
Francis Acolitse, took advantage of improving conditions on the course to row to a convincing 4.7 second margin over Rochester. West Point finished a close third.
