POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College baseball team dropped game one of its' three-game series to Marist, 18-4 on Friday afternoon. The Gaels got RBI's from
Nick Forney,
Will Jennings, and
Jake Field on the road at McCann Baseball Field.
GAME SUMMARY
Marist, who came into today's contest rated the third best lineup in the MAAC, started fast, scoring three opening inning runs. The runs came off of three singles but
Blake Helmstetter limited the damage, picking up a strikeout and fly-out to end the first.
Trailing 3-0, the Gaels got a run back in the following inning, taking advantage of a bases-loaded balk that scored Brad Polisnky. The rally began with Polinsky reaching base via a walk and followed with a single from
Jim Kemp along with
Phoenix Bowman reaching on a walk that loaded the bases up.
Between the second and third inning the Red Foxes added to the lead. With two runners on Gavin Noriega brought them both in on a two-run RBI double and in the third inning, and a three-run homer from Gene Napolitano gave Marsit separation with an 8-1 advantage.
Iona had its best inning at the plate in the sixth, scoring three runs to cut into Marist lead. The inning began with singles from Bowman and
Nick Carnevale and both would take a base on a wild pitch. This setup Forney's RBI single that scored Bowman and the following batter Jennings, brought in the second run on an RBI single. Field drove in Iona's last run of the inning and game after reaching base on a fielder's choice, scoring Forney to make it 10-4.
Marist countered Iona's three-run sixth inning, with three runs of their own using an RBI triple and two-run homer to extend the lead. The bats for the Red Foxes continued to stay hot, scoring an additional two-runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth as Marist took game one of the series, 18-4 at McCann Baseball Field.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- With his two-hit performance, Carnevale now leads Iona with 39 on the year. Forney's two-hit day puts him one behind Carnevale, sitting at 38 on the season.
- Jake Field now makes it five straight games recording an RBI. The senior DH leads the Gaels with 17 RBI's and total-bases with 60.
- Jennings is one off the lead with 16 runs batted in, as the right fielder has recorded an RBI in four of the last five games.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon with game two between Iona and Marist scheduled for 1:00 PM.
