BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College Baseball team came up short in game one of their weekend series to Canisius, 12-6 on Friday afternoon. With the game tied at five in the seventh the Griffs used a six run inning, including a grand slam to create separation at the Demske Sports Complex.

Luca Lotito and sophomoreÂ
Jim Kemp both launched their first career home runs in the ball game with Lotito's coming in the sixth inning and Kemp's in the ninth.Â
GAME SUMMARY
Canisius took an early 1-0 lead after an RBI double from Max Grant but the inning stalled there for the Griffs with senior
Drew Helmstetter retiring the final two batters of the inning. Helmstetter faced the minimum in the second inning, picking up his first strikeouts on the day.
Canisius added two more runs in the third but in the ensuing inning, Iona managed to cut into the deficit, getting on the board with two runs. Senior
Nick Carnevale continued his hot streak, recording the Gaels first hit of the afternoon, doubling to right field to set up the inning. The next batter, junior
Nick Forney delivered a single through the left side bringing in Carnevale for the RBI. Later in the inning, with two-outs Lotito singled the other way bringing in Forney from second and cutting the lead to 3-2.
Once again the Gaels were facing a three-run deficit after Canisius added two more runs in the home half of the fifth inning. The Griffs saw the lead evaporate quickly with senior

Jake Field drawing a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate. With one out, Lotito stepped up and hit a three-run homer over the left field scoreboard to tie the game at 5.Â
With the score still deadlocked at five entering the bottom of the seventh, the Griffs managed to retake control of the game. With one run already in, Mike DeStefano launched a grand slam to right field, putting Canisius in front by six runs after seven innings of play.
Trailing 12-5, Kemp led off the ninth sending a 1-0 fastball over the left field fence for the Gaels second home-run of the afternoon. However, Canisius closed out the ninth retiring the final three batters to take game one of the series by a final score of, 12-6.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Lotito and Kemp's home-runs mark the first time this season Iona's hit multiple home-runs in a game.
- Lotito's four RBI afternoon, are the most by a Gael in a game this season. The senior's seven RBI's are fourth most on the club
- Carnevale's on base streak reaches 12 games and it's the first time this season the senior has recorded multiple extra base hits (2B/3B) in a game.
- Carnevale is now up to 24 hits on the season which ranks first on the Gaels.
- Helmstetter's five innings is the longest outing of his career and his five K's are the second most of his career.

The series from Demske Sports Complex will continue tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 PM between the Gaels and the Griffs.
