LEONIA, NJ - This morning the Gaels made the short trip to Leonia, NJ to race the lightweight four against the Lions of Columbia University.
RACE SUMMARY
The quartet of
Francis Acolitse,
John Swanson,
Sergey Karpov,
Oliver Sanchez, and coxswain
John Tomsen finished third behind two Columbia crews. Columbia 'A' lead from the start and never looked back meanwhile Iona had a solid start of their own and maintained connection with Columbia 'B' for the entire 2000m.
"In the third 500 the Gaels made a strong push to overtake the advantage Columbia's second crew had on us but the Lions pushed right back and didn't give it up", said coach
John Boyd. "I'm proud of the way the guys raced today and their performance should serve as a boost in confidence as we enter the final phase of training before the Dad Vail Regatta."
The main event of the morning was the Geiger Cup, annually contested between the first varsity 8's of Columbia and Cornell. Iona was an invited guest to race in the varsity four. This year Cornell took the Geiger Cup.
