BROOKVILLE, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team dropped a mid-week contest, 2-1, at Long Island University.
Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez converted a penalty kick in the second half to cut Iona's deficit in half, but the Gaels could not find an equalizer.
MATCH SUMMARY
Emil Jaaskelainen scored a pair of goals in the opening 11 minutes of the match, putting Iona in an early hole. The Gaels would trim the deficit in the 55th minute after Gonzalez Fernandez scored a penalty kick goal, burying a raised shot in the upper-right corner. The Maroon & Gold were awarded a penalty kick after
Camil Azzam Ruiz was taken down inside the box during his season debut.
Ricardo Senen Pinillos and Gonzalez Fernandez nearly found the equalizer in separate moments for the Gaels, but LIU's Sergio Peralta made big stops to maintain his team's lead.
Iona played a man-up after the Sharks had a player sent off after being issued a red card. The advantage, with Iona trailing by a goal, lasted until the 69th minute when Federico Russo was handed his second yellow card of the afternoon. The final 25-plus minutes of the match were played 10-on-10.
