Iona MSOC and Columbia Play to Scoreless Draw

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Columbia in its non-conference finale at Mazzella Field on Saturday.

MATCH SUMMARY

For the first time in exactly two weeks, Iona men's soccer was back in action on Saturday morning. It was the first match on Mazzella Field for the men since defeating NJIT 3-2 on September 6.

Each side began play with a shot towards goal in the opening fifteen minutes, but the keepers on each side were up to task. Columbia's Michael Collodi stops on three of Iona's four shots in the first half, keeping the Gaels off the board. Juan Alfaro Monge did his job in net during the first half, making a save on the lone shot on goal by the Lions. Iona's defense did well to limit the opposition to just three shots in the first half.

Aly Camara and Thiago Cagna both had chances to break a scoreless tie after the halftime intermission, but Collodi made saves on each try by the Iona strikers. Alfaro Monge made one huge save in the second half, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard as well. There was not much going forward for either side in the second half, eventually seeing the match end in a 0-0 draw after 90 full minutes in New Rochelle.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona outshot Columbia 10-6; the Gaels also held a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Cagna, Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez and Joe Wright led the Gaels with two shots apiece.
  • Six different Gaels registered a shot on goal in the scoreless draw.
  • Monge made two saves in goal, earning the first draw of his collegiate career.
  • Iona is now 2-2-1 all-time against Columbia. The Gaels had won the previous two meetings (2021, 2014) before the draw today. Columbia has not scored a goal against Iona in the previous three meetings, with the Maroon & Gold last conceding a goal to the Lions in a 2013 matchup.
