Iona Drops a Pair on the Road at Monmouth

The Iona University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Team went on the road on Friday and came away empty handed as the Monmouth University team handed the Gaels a pair of losses.

The Iona men fell 160-102 to drop to 4-2 on the season, while the women fell to 2-5 after a 143-119 defeat.

"Monmouth swam very well and that is to their credit. We didn't put together many complete races," commented Head Coach Nick Cavataro. "There were cases where we had a good first half of the race and no back end and other spots where it was the opposite. It was a frustrating afternoon."

Monmouth came out fast taking the opening women's and men's 200-yard Medley Relay events and never looked back.

The Iona women managed four wins in the 14-event format, including a pair by graduate student Isabella Nicholson in the 50-Free and 200-Free with respective times of 24.86 and 1:57.99. Senior Co-Captain Megan Josephs added a win in the 100-Freestyle at 54.27 and graduate student Tristan Urso took the day's final race, leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400-yard Individual Medley at 4:37.29, with teammates Brennyn Veit and Anabel Huffstutler at 4:37.55 and 4:38.61, respectively.

The Gaels only relay win came in the women's 200-Free Relay where Nicholson combined with Ashley Benkert, Erin McKinney and Josephs to edge the Hawks by 42 to win at 1:39.37.

The Iona men claimed five of the 14 races with Senior Michael Faughnan leading with a pair of wins, taking the 100-Back at 50.91 and the 500-Free at 4:41.70. Junior Matthew Loftus won the 100m-Breaststroke at 59.17 with freshmen Noah Giunta taking the 400-IM event at 4:12.04, and classmate Kieran Egan winning the 200-Backstroke at 1:52.63.

The Gaels next return to action on Dec. 1 as they participate in the ECAC Winter championships at Nassau County Aquatic Complex.
