WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Iona University baseball team dropped both games in today's round robin action at UNC Wilmington. The Gaels fell in game one to Georgetown 3-0, and fell to the host UNC Wilmington 11-3, in the second game.
Josiah Ragsdale and
Nickolas Mora each picked up their first career RBIs in game two, both coming on RBI triples.
GAME ONE: GEORGETOWN 3, IONA 0
Following a walk to
Jordan Overton,
Jake Field went the other way, lining a double to give Iona an early scoring opportunity. However, the Hoyas starting pitcher Cody Jenson escaped the jam, picking up a groundout and an inning ending strikeout.
Making his second start of the season,
Teo Torrado retired the first seven batters he faced with the six out of the outs coming on the ground. Torrado's scoreless streak of six innings came to an end following a wild pitch that scored Georgetown's Brian Depman from third. The Hoyas had a chance to extend the lead with the bases loaded, but an inning double-play kept the Gaels within a run.
In his final inning of work Torrado picked up his lone strikeout to begin the fourth inning, but for the second straight inning, the Hoyas managed to load up the bases. Similar to the third, Torrado would bend but not break, getting his last batter of the day to fly-out.
Michael Lorenzetti came in relief and retired the first two batters he faced but a solo homer from Austin Kretzschmar, extended the Hoyas lead to 2-0. Lorenzetti bounced back, pitching a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, while adding two strikeouts.
Following Lorenzetti,
Sean Davis came in relief and his lone inning of work got an inning ending double-play but not before Cody Bowker added to the Hoyas lead with an RBI single, making it 3-0 Hoyas.
Despite a leadoff double from
Will Jennings, the Gaels ninth inning rally halted there, as Georgetown took game one, 3-0 at Brooks Field.
GAME TWO: UNCW 11, IONA 3
Both teams were unable to score in the first two innings but UNC Wilmington bats came alive in the home half of the third, scoring six runs on four hits. With runners still in scoring position,
Carl Kuentzel got the Gaels out of the inning with an inning ending groundout.
The Gaels managed to get a run back in the fifth, after a two-out walk from Mora, Ragsdale delivered his first career RBI, driving in Mora on a triple to center field.
In the ensuing inning, with a runner on first Mora tripled to right center, scoring Nick Dicarlo for his first career RBI as a Gael. Two batters later,
Nick Forney drove in Mora on a single up the middle for his first RBI of the '23 season.
Ahead 8-3, The Seahawks added some more insurance in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on a two-run homer from Tanner Thach and an RBI double from Bryan Arendt.
The lead would be too much for the Gaels to overcome as UNC Wilmington took game one of two against the Gaels, 11-3 on Friday afternoon.
