WILMINGTON, NC. - The Iona University baseball team earned its second win of the season after defeating UNC Wilmington 13-9, at Brooks Field on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels offense led the charge with six different players recording an RBI with nine of those runs coming in the first two innings of the game.
Game Summary
Following a leadoff walk,
Josiah Ragsdale stole second base, moving him into scoring position, leading to an RBI double from
Jake Field to open the scoring. With runners on second and third,
Jordan Overton drove in
Nick Forney on a sac-fly and an RBI single off the bat of
Phoenix Bowman, put Iona in front, 3-0.
In the next inning, the Gaels bats continued to stay hot, scoring six runs on six hits in the second. With the bases-loaded
Nick Forney recorded an RBI single, followed by Overton's second sac-fly in two innings. Keeping the line moving, Bowman delivered his second RBI single, this time scoring two runs and extending the Iona lead to 7-1.
Anthony Febo provided the final two runs of the inning, scoring Bowman and
Will Jennings on a two-run RBI single putting the Gaels ahead by eight runs.
With the offense continuing to be the theme, the Seahawks cut into Iona's lead, scoring six runs in the third inning, taking advantage of multiple errors. Later in the inning with the tying run at the plate,
Andrew Gaines picked up an inning ending groundout to keep Iona in front.
UNC Wilmington pulled within two runs following a sac-fly from Aiden Evans but in the ensuing inning, Bowman delivered his fourth RBI of the game this time scoring Field from third, who reached on a triple.Â
With a run already across the board in the home half of the sixth, Jac Croom singled through the right side bringing in a run and cutting Iona's lead down to a run. With the tying run at second,
Michael Untracht picked up an inning ending groundout to keep Iona in front 10-9 after six innings of play.
Every time the Seahawks got within striking distance, the Gaels had an answer and this time with runners on first and second, Ragsdale lined a triple to right center, scoring two runs to give Iona some breathing room once again. Overton provided some more insurance for Iona in the eighth, launching his first career home-run to extend Iona's lead to 13-9.
Loncey Conyers came in relief and threw a scoreless seventh and eighth, adding multiple strikeouts in both innings. Looking to rally in the final inning the Seahawks loaded up the bases bringing the tying run up, but
Matt Zguro closed the deal for the Gaels, on a game ending strikeout, securing the Gaels road victory.
