Iona Water Polo Splits Final Day At Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ – The Iona women's water polo team opened a four-game weekend road trip with two close wins over LaSalle University and Bucknell University at the Princeton Invite hosted here this weekend by Princeton University.

To start the day at the Princeton Invitational the Gaels faced Harvard at 2:30 pm. The opposition opened the scoring just over a minute in and kept the foot on the gas with two more goals, keeping the Maroon & Gold off the board for the first 4 and half minutes. Harvard responded back with two more goals to close out the opening quarter. Iona's lone goal came from senior Karsyn Stewart

Iona's offense started to pick up a little in the second quarter, scoring three goals. But as the Gaels picked it up the Crimson repeated their first quarter goal number and entered the halftime break up 10-4. The goals in the second were scored by Kaya Hart, Remy Ickes, and number 7 Amelia Gonzalez. Harvard's offense didn't slow down in the second half, they opened the third quarter with four straight goals before Miranda Miller cut into the lead. Goals from Jenna Handali and Addison Collins made it a ten goal game entering the final quarter. 

Iona was kept off the board in the final frame while Harvard added four more goals to their total. The Gaels were called for 21 ejections with four different Gaels being ejected, Jordan van Reeken, Mia Tovar, Amelia Gonzalez, and Malia Nagule. Compared to Harvard being called for only 13 ejections. Iona won all four swim-offs with freshman Lola Trujillo winning three and Mia Tovar taking the last quarter one.

Chapman opened the scoring two minutes into the game, before the Gaels offense explored for a four to nothing run, the four goals came from the mitts of Jordan van Reeken, Malia Naugle, Addison Collins, and Karsyan Stewart. Before the end of the opening quarter the Panthers closed the gap to 4-2. The Maroon & Gold and the opposition went back and forth to start the second quarter. 

But five goals from four different Gaels stretch the Maroon & Gold lead to six goals at the halftime break. Goals in the second quarter came from van Reeken, Tovar, Stewart, and Collins netting her hat trick. Gaels continued  with the offense in the second half, out scoring the Panthers 8-6. The eight second half goals came from van Reeken with five and seven for the day, Gonzalez, Nagule, and Handali.

Jenna Handali and Freshman Lola Tujrillo shared the swim off duties with both of them taking two wins each. As a team Iona was ejected seven times and drew 10 with Miranda Miller being ejected three times.

The Gaels travel to the West Coast next week to compete in the Claremont Convergence Tournament on March 3 & 4.
