Iona WBB Falls in Home Regular Season Finale to Marist

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University women's basketball team lost to Marist, 70-60, on Thursday afternoon at the Hynes Center. The loss snapped Iona's 16-game winning streak and was the Gaels' first at the Hynes Center since November 17, 2022.

THE RUNDOWN

After trailing for the entire contest, Iona battled back in the fourth quarter to even the score with six minutes to play. Trifectas from Kate Mager and Natalia Otkhmezuri helped the Gaels tie the game, but a cold shooting spell and some offensive miscues closed the door on a potential come-from-behind win for Iona.

Otkhmezuri, after nailing the game-tying three, had another look and a chance to put Iona in front, but the shot rimmed out after nearly going halfway down. Marist scored on the ensuing possession, re-taking the lead and never relinquishing it. Iona turned the ball over five times and missed its final seven shot attempts in the closing six minutes of action as the opening bill of a season-ending doubleheader at the Hynes Center.

  • Catie Cunningham corralled a game-high 13 rebounds, finishing one point shy of a double-double.

TEAM STATS

  • Marist's 70 points are the highest for an Iona opponent since St. John's poured in 77 in a win over the Gaels back in December. The Gaels have surrendered 70 or more points for just the third time this season, losing all three of those contests.
  • The Red Foxes scored 39 first-half points, the highest scoring first half by a MAAC opponent against Iona this season. The 70 points are the most by a league foe against the Gaels this year.
  • For the first time in 15 contests this season, Iona ended up on the losing end of the scoreboard after registering between 60 and 69 points. The Maroon & Gold are 18-2 this season when scoring at least 60 points.
  • The Gaels shot a better percentage overall than the Red Foxes (41.1% - 39.7%), though Marist was more efficient from three-point range (46.2% - 34.8%) and the free throw line (93.3% - 75.0%).
  • Iona never led, the first time in league play that the Gaels trailed wire-to-wire. Iona battled back in the fourth to tie the contest at 60, but Marist ended the game on a 10-0 run over the final six-plus minutes.
  • The Red Foxes finished with an edge in rebounds (40-32) and pulled down 14 boards on the offensive glass, creating eight second-chance points. Iona finished with a slight edge in assists (16-14), losing a game for just the third time this season when having an advantage in the assist column.
