LONG ISLAND, NY - The Iona University baseball team came up short in their 12-2 loss to Stony Brook, on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field. The Gaels lost their lead in the sixth inning after the Seawolves managed to score 11 runs to break open the ballgame.
Jake Field drove in Iona's first run for his 16th RBI of the season and came around to score for the Gaels second run in the eighth inning.
Game Summary
The Gaels picked up where there they left off on Sunday, scoring in their first plate appearance.
Anthony Zollo led-off the game with a single and later in the inning came around to score on Field's RBI single to give Iona a 1-0 lead. Field has now driven in a run in each of the Gaels last five games.
Iona's pitching tandem of
Alex Hunt,
Eric Gialloreto,
Matt Zguro,
Tyler Lender, and
Sean Davis kept Ithe Gaels lead intact, holding Stony Brook off the board through five innings. After Hunt and Gialloreto worked the first and second inning, Zguro shined in his lone inning of work, striking out the side. Lender followed up and retired all three batters he faced in the fourth, completing a stretch where Iona pitchers retired eight consecutive batters.
Following a scoreless frame in the fifth, Davis returned to the mound in the sixth but unfortunately, the Seawolves bats came alive in the deceive inning. Stony Brook tied the game on a single from Evan Giordano but soon after Davis recorded a fly-out for the second out of the inning. However, Stony Brook managed to score 10 runs all with two-outs in the inning to break open the game. Matt Brown-Eiring drove in the final three runs on a bases-clearing double down the left field line, extending the lead to 11-1.
Trailing 12-1,
Jake Field came around to score following a wild pitch for Iona's second run of the game but unfortunately the deficit was too large to overcome as the Gaels fell on the road 12-2, at Joe Nathan Field.
