Iona Water Polo Splits Second Day of Claremont Convergence

Pomona, CA – The Iona women's water polo bounced back after a rough start to the west coast trip with a 17-15 win over La Verne. But fell in the night cap to Pomona Pitzer 12-9.

The Leopards opened the scoring but Sydney Brightenburg found the back of the net 24 seconds later to knot things back up. The opposition would answer even faster to regain the one goal lead. Freshman Lola Trujillo capitalized on the extra attacker and notched a powerplay goal to tie it back up. With 4:33 still left in the first quarter the foe scored the fifth goal of the game. Down one goal the Gaels went on to score three straight goals and took the first multiple goal lead of the game. Mia Tovar and Jenna Handli joined the first quarter fun before La Verne scored one in the final minute making it a one goal game entering the second frame. 

Just like the first the Leopards opened the scoring in the second, then scored again on the powerplay and regained a one goal lead. The Gaels offense didn't back down as they outscored them 4-1 over the final three minutes and took a two goal lead into the halftime break. Jordan van Reeken and Malia Naugle also scored first half goals. Van Reeken started off the third with a goal extending the Iona lead to three. Iona and La Verne would go back and forth for the entire third quarter keeping the Iona three goal lead intact going into the final eight minutes. 

Addison Collins notched her second of the game to start the fourth, Jordan van Reeken recorded her hat trick sandwich in two La Verne goals as the Gaels held a three goal lead with 4:53 left to play. Another goal from La Verne with 3:53 left to play closed it to a two goal game but goals from Kaya Hart and Brightenburg down the stretch closed out the victory for the Maroon & Gold. Lilly Morris picked up the win in net for the Gaels making four saves.

The Sagehen's opened with the first two goals of the game before Sydney Brightenburg found the back of the net four minutes in to get the Gaels on the board. Mia Tovar followed up with a goal of her own that knotted things up at 2-2. With a minute left Pomona re-took the lead heading into the second quarter. 

Lola Trujillo started the action in the second quarter sneaking one by the tender for the tying goal. Three minutes left Graduate student Jordan van Reeken gave the Gaels their first lead of the game. The opposition went on a three goal run to close out the first half. Starting the second half with a two goal lead the Sagehen's continued with two more goals and reached a four goal lead. 

Three straight goals from van Reeken, Brightenburg, and Trujillo closed the gap to one. Both teams scored in the first minute of the fourth and final quarter keeping it a one goal game. Over the final five minutes the Maroon & Gold were outscored 3-1 as the offense failed to mustard a comeback. The Gaels were ejected 12 times and received two yellow cards.

Before heading home the Gaels will take on Cal Luthern on Monday March 6 at 6pm.
