Iona Water Polo Splits A Pair of Overtime Games

LEXINGTON, VA-  In the first two of three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference here this weekend hosted by the Virginia Military Institute.

Iona 13 Villanova 12 OT

In a sudden-death triple overtime match that featured nine ties and seven lead changes, Iona rallied with three overtime goals for a 13-12 conference win over Villanova. Graduate co-captain Jordan Van Reeken led the Gaels with five goals on seven shots, while graduate student Karsyn Stewart, junior Amelia Gonzalez and freshman Jenna Handall scored twice. Freshman Lola Trujillo and freshman Sadie Sallas added one goal apiece.The Gaels scored 13 goals on 38 shots and made nine assists with four by graduate co-captain Malia Naugle.

In goal, junior Lilly Morris made 13 saves on 29 Wildcats shots, had five steals and one assist with 12 goals against. On defense, Iona made 12 steals with three from Van Reeken, who also blocked one shot. Iona drew six Villanova kickouts with three by Van Reeken, while being ejected four times. The Gaels turned the ball over 14 times. Trujillo won five of six swim-offs.Iona scored three goals on seven woman-up chances, while Villanova scored on two of three chances.

With 1:30 gone in the match, Villanova struck first on 6-5 advantage, but Van Reeken answered 21 seconds later on Iona's next trip down the pool to tie the game at one apiece. The Wildcats went back up one on a five-meter penalty shot with 5:15 left in the opening period. Stewart only needed 28 ticks into the second period to knot the game at two each.  Van Reeken's second goal just 1:01 later put Iona up one 3-2, but the Wildcats answered with a five-meter penalty goal to retie the score at two each with 6:14 on the clock. With 3:10 remaining, the Wildcats retook a one-goal 4-3 edge. Continuing a 3-0 run, Villanova upped its lead to two with 28 seconds to go for a 5-3 halftime lead.

Stewart opened the third period as she did the second with her second score to time the Wildcats margin back to one with 18 seconds gone. Following another Villanova goal, Van Reeken hit her third score to get the Gaels back within one 6-5 at the 5:15 mark. With 4:30 remaining, the Wildcats struck again, but Van Reeken answered on a five-meter penalty shot just 28 seconds later to cut the Villanova edge back to one 7-6. On her fifth score, Van Reeken tied the match on a woman-up chance at seven apiece with 2:35 left. The Wildcats regained a one-goal edge with three ticks left for an 8-7 advantage going into the final period.

With 2:27 gone in the final period, Trujillo's breakaway goal on Morris' assist tied the game at eight, but the Wildcats scored on their next possession with 5:11 left. Gonzalez re-knotted the game at nine on the Gaels next chance at the 4:40 mark.  Sallas continued a 2-0 Gaels rally for the match's fifth lead change as Iona went back up one 10-9 with 3:30 remaining. Villanova evened the score for the seventh time at ten all at the 1:57 mark as the match went into overtime.

Just 53 seconds into the first overtime period, the Wildcats went back up one 11-10. Handall's catch-and-shoot score knotted the game at 11 all with 48 ticks remaining. But the Wildcats answered at the 36-second mark for a one-goal 12-11 edge going into the second overtime period. Handall buried a rebound into the back of the net with 22 ticks gone in the second overtime to even the match at 12 apiece. With Morris stopping a last-second Wildcats shot, the match went into a third overtime. Just 22 ticks into the third overtime, Gonzalez's missed shot floated into the goal for the Iona 13-12 win.

La Salle 11 Iona 10 OT

Leading by two goals 5-3 at halftime, the Gaels were outscored 7-5 in the second half by LaSalle in a 11-10 overtime loss in this evening's game. Sallas led the Gaels with three goals on 4 shots, while Van Reeken scored twice.  Stewart, sophomore Addison Collins, Handall and Trujillo each had one goal. The Gaels scored 10 goals on 33 shots and made nine assists with two each by Trujillo.

In goal, Morris made 10 saves on ten Explorers shots, had 0 steals and 0 assists with 11 goals against. Iona drew 8 LaSalle kickout, while being ejected 3 times.Trujillo won all six swim-offs. With 2:39 gone in the match, the Explorers scored first, then followed with their second straight goal for a 2-0 edge with 4:27 remaining in the opening period.  Stewart finally got the Gaels on the board to slice the LaSalle lead to one 2-1 with 1:27 remaining. Another Explorers score opened the second period to increase their edge to two 3-1 with 41 seconds gone. Van Reeken's first score chopped the LaSalle advantage back to one, followed by Collins to tie the score at three apiece with 3:18 left. Handall continued a 3-0 Iona run for the Gaels first lead 4-3 with 1:08 on the clock. With 19 ticks to go, Trujillo tacked on another unanswered Iona score for a two-goal 5-3 halftime lead.

LaSalle needed just 53 seconds into the third period to pull back within one 5-4. The Explorers tied the score at five each on their next trip down the pool with 6:10 remaining. LaSalle's third consecutive score put the Explorers back up one 6-5, but Tovar ended the Gaels scoring drought to knot the game at six all with 3:36 left. LaSalle answered with two more straight scores for a two-goal 8-6 edge with 2:21 on the clock. Sallas's goal with 57 seconds left cut the LaSalle margin back to one 8-7 going into the final period.

The Explorers scored with just 52 seconds gone in the final period to up their lead to two 9-7. Sallas' second score pulled Iona back within one 9-8 with 5:19 on the clock. Sallas followed on a back-hand goal on Iona's next chance to retie the game for fourth time at nine each at the 4:32 mark. Neither team scored in the remaining time in regulation to force overtime.

With two straight scores in the opening 1:36 of the first overtime period, LaSalle retook a two-goal 11-9 advantage.  Van Reeken's second score on a five-meter penalty shot cut the Explorers' edge back to one 11-10 with 55 ticks left going into the second overtime. Neither team scored in the second overtime to preserve the LaSalle win. With 16 seconds left, Trujillo replaced Morris in goal for a last-second shot which was blocked by a LaSalle defender.
