STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Iona University baseball team fell in midweek action losing to Wagner, 9-0, at SIUH Community Park on Tuesday afternoon. After Wagner scored eight runs across the first three innings, the Gaels bullpen only allowed one run in over five innings of work. Despite the loss,
Jake Field recorded multiple hits for the 14th time this season and over his last four games, Field has 10 hits.
Game Summary
Wagner managed to open up the scoring in the bottom half of the first, scoring a pair of runs off Iona starter
Clark Eder. A fielder's choice brought in the first run for Wagner with the second coming on a successful double steal attempt from the Seahawks. Eder got Iona out of the inning with an inning ending fly-out.
Leading 2-0 Wagner added to their lead on a home-run in the second and opened up the lead to 8-0, after scoring five runs in the third inning.
Joey Kasper, the first man out of Iona's bullpen, retired the first batter he faced to get the Gaels out of the inning.
Kasper went on to pitch a scoreless fourth inning adding a pair of strikeouts before handing it off to
Nick Chiaia, who retired the side in his lone inning of work.
Andrew Gaines followed up and despite the first two batters reaching base, he settled in, recording three consecutive fly-outs to get out of the sixth inning.Â
Matt Zguro relieved Gaines and despite allowing a run, Zguro picked up three strikeouts in the frame, raising his strikeout total to 27 on the season, tying him for first on the club.
Cooper Haseley was the last reliever out of the Gaels bullpen as he went on to throw a scoreless frame, retiring the side in the eighth inning.
Despite Iona's offense getting a base-runner on base in eight of the nine innings, the Gaels couldn't mount any runs, losing 9-0 to Wagner, on Tuesday afternoon.Â

Iona will resume MAAC play this weekend, traveling to Hamden Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday, April 14 Â at 3:00 PM.
