Iona Water Polo Defeats Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, CT April 12 - Leading the whole match with twelve players scoring and the entire squad playing, the Iona University women's water polo team recorded a 19-9 non-conference road win over NCAA Division III Connecticut College here this evening.

GAME SUMMARY

Graduate student co-captain Jordan Van Reeken led the Gaels (14-11 overall, 5-5 MAAC) with four goals on four shots, while freshman Miranda Miller scored three times on four shots. Junior Elizabeth Lovat, sophomore Addison Collins, and freshman Lola Trujillo had two goals each. Graduate student Sydney Brightenburg, senior co-captain Mia Tovar, junior Amelia Gonzalez, freshman Jenna Handali, freshman Lea Preston and freshman Sadie Sallas each scored a goal. The Gaels scored 19 goals on 32 shots and made 11 assists with two each by Van Reeken and Gonzalez.

In goal, sophomore Lilly Morris made 11 saves on 19 Camels shots, and two steals with nine goals against. On defense, Iona made 15 steals with three by Brightenburg, and blocked two shots. Iona drew five Connecticut kickouts, while being ejected three times, including one five-meter penalty.  Iona won all four swim offs. The Gaels turned the ball over nine times. Iona scored two goals on four woman-up chances, while Connecticut did not score on two chances.

Beginning with Brightenburg's backhand score with 22 seconds gone in the match, the Gaels reeled off three straight goals by Trujillo, Tovar and Van Reeken for a 4-0 edge with 3:11 left. After a Connecticut timeout, Sallas upped the Iona edge to five 5-0 at the 2:43 mark. With 52 ticks remaining, the Camels got on the board to slice the Gaels margin back to four 5-1 going into the second period.

Following Preston's woman-up goal just 47 seconds into the second quarter, the Camels answered to trim the Iona lead to four 6-2 only nine ticks later. Two consecutive Iona goals by Lovat and Gonzalez upped the Gaels margin to six 8-2 with 22 seconds left. But a last-second Camels score cut the Iona edge back to five 8-3 at halftime. After the Camels second straight score with 2:19 gone in third period pulled the hosts within four 8-4, Van Reeken's second goal put the Gaels back up five 9-4 with 5:22 remaining.

Following another Connecticut score, Iona took off on a 3-0 run with two goals from Miller and one by Collins to mount a 12-5 lead with 3:24 left. The Camels did the same with three unanswered scores to slice the Gaels lead back to four 12-8 with 31 ticks on the clock. Collins' second score ended the Camels rally with five seconds to go to put Iona up five 13-8 going into the final period.

Van Reeken's third goal continued a 4-0 Gaels run with scores from Handali and Trujillo for a 16-8 Iona edge with 6:40 to go in regulation. Van Reeken found the back of the net for the fourth time followed by Miller's hat-trick third score capping a 6-0 run for the Gaels largest lead 18-8 with 3:10 left. After the Camels converted a five-meter penalty shot, Lovat's second goal sealed the 19-9 win with 1:19 remaining.

COACH THOUGHTS

Playing his entire squad, Iona head coach Brian Kelly was confident that today's "good tune up" would prepare the team for a successful three-match conference weekend. "This was a good tune up to get ready for our biggest weekend of the season," Kelly said. "We were able to get the entire team minutes and everybody contributed positively. We're looking forward to having a great weekend."

UP NEXT

This weekend the Gaels will host three Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matches at Hynes Pool. On Saturday, following the Senior Day ceremony, Iona takes on Siena College at noon EDT, and St. Francis College (Brooklyn) at 6pm On Sunday, the Gaels face Marist College at 1:15 p.m.
