Iona Baseball Falls on the Road to Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Iona University baseball team came up short in a mid-week matchup against Hofstra, losing 8-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Josiah Ragsdale and Jim Pasquale provided the Gaels offense, each manufacturing a run in the losing effort at University Field.

Game Summary

Clark Eder got the start for Iona and worked a scoreless first inning on the mound. After surrendering a run in the second, Eder responded, striking out the next two hitters before picking up an inning ending groundout. After Hofstra added a run in the third on an RBI single, The Pride were looking for more with the bases-loaded, but Eder escaped further trouble picking up an inning strikeout.

Trailing 2-0 entering the fourth, Will Jennings led off with a double, extending his hitting streak to six games. Following a single off the bat of Ragsdale, Jennings came around to score from second base on an errant throw. Ragsdale's three-hits mark a new a career-high for the freshmen outfielder. Later in the inning, a wild pitch led to Iona's second run as Pasquale came around to score the tying run after the errant pitch.

Down a run in the sixth inning, Jim Pasquale leveled the game on one swing, launching his third home-run of the season, tying the game up at 3-3.

Hofstra reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the frame, as Kevin Bruggeman singled up the middle scoring the go-ahead on the play. Joey Kasper got an inning ending groundout to keep the deficit at one but The Pride added two insurance runs in the seventh inning off of Eric Gialloreto.

Leading 6-3 Hofstra opened up its biggest margin of the afternoon after scoring two more runs in the eighth inning on a home-run and RBI walk. Down to their final three outs, Iona couldn't mount any more runs, falling 8-3 to Hofstra, in their lone matchup of the 2023 season.
