NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University baseball team came up short in a wild back and forth game, losing to Siena 19-14 at City Park. The Gaels rallied from a five run deficit, scoring 10 unanswered runs between the fourth and seventh inning, but an 11 run eighth inning rally by the Saints, propelled Siena to the victory in the series finale.
Game Summary
The Gaels began the afternoon scoring three runs in their opening at-bat. With a runner on first,
Nick Forney unleashed a two-run homer to open up the scoring with his second long-ball in as many days.
James Kemp drove in Iona's third runner of the inning on a sac-fly to give Iona a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Siena responded, scoring eight unanswered, starting with four runs in the second inning and four more runs in the fourth to open up an 8-3 lead. With runners still in scoring position,
Clark Eder came in relief and picked up the final two outs of the fourth inning, a strikeout and groundout to keep the deficit at five runs.
Iona got three runs back in the bottom half of the inning that began on an RBI single from
Nickolas Mora. Trailing 8-4,
Jake Field scored two runs on a single to left, bringing the Gaels within two runs. Field recorded his 100th career RBI on the hit as he became only the 15th player in Iona history to reach the 100 career RBI milestone.
Josiah Ragsdale brought Iona within a run following an RBI single in the fifth and Field tied the game in the sixth, with an RBI triple and soon after came in to score after Kemp got hit by a pitch. Leading 9-8, Ragsdale extended the Gaels lead with a two-run single, driving in his sixth and seventh RBI of the series. Consecutive RBI singles from
Jim Pasquale and Kemp opened up a 13-8 lead for the Gaels through seven innings of play.
However Siena rallied, erasing the deficit and scoring 11 runs in the eighth as they sent 14 hitters to bat in the game changing inning. Sean Camacho drove in the go-ahead run, breaking the 13-13 tie and a three-run homer from Vince DiNicola broke open the game.
Anthony Zollo drove in Iona's final run on a single but the Gaels couldn't overcome a five run deficit for the second time in the game, dropping the series finale to Siena, 19-14 from City Park.
