Iona Baseball Drops Series Finale at Marist

RED HOOK, NY - The Iona University baseball team came up short, losing 13-12 to Marist at Honey Field on Sunday morning. The Gaels jumped out to a 9-1 lead following a five-run fifth inning but the Red Foxes rallied and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

Game Summary

The scoring began in the second inning after James Kemp delivered an RBI double and Anthony Zollo followed up, driving in two Gaels on a single. Leading 3-1, The Gaels tacked onto their advantage on a sac-fly from Will Jennings as Iona maintained a three run lead after four innings of play.

Iona's best inning at the plate came in the fifth inning that began on a two-run triple from Chris Mariani, marking the first three-bagger of his career. The ensuing batter, Nickolas Mora singled through the right side, scoring Mariani and Jennings capped the inning, driving in two more runs to open up a 9-1 Iona lead.

Marist countered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to climb back into the ballgame. Brain Hart sparked the rally with a grandslam and the Red Foxes scored an additional three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game.

The Gaels responded, retaking the lead on RBI doubles from Jake Field and Jayson Gonzalez putting Iona in front, 12-9 in the seventh. But with the Gaels unable to score any more runs as Marist ended the game scoring four unanswered runs.

The Red Foxes scored four runs in the seventh including the go-ahead RBI single from Justin Kapuscinski, taking their first lead of the morning. Iona didn't manage a base runner in the final two innings as Marist earned the 13-12 victory, claiming the series.
