Anderson Tabs Four For Iona MBB Coaching Staff

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona University men's basketball head coach Tobin Anderson announced the appointment of three assistant coaches and a director of basketball operations. Tom Bonacum, Kam Murrell and Ray Savage join Anderson from Fairleigh Dickinson and Patrick Wallace comes to New Rochelle from Loyola Chicago. Bonacum, Murrell and Wallace will serve as assistant coaches and Savage will be the program's director of operations.

"We have put together a staff that is hungry and passionate and with guys I know and am comfortable with that will help lead us to MAAC Championships, NCAA bids and hopefully NCAA wins," said Coach Anderson.

TOM BONACUM – ASSISTANT COACH

Bonacum spent the last four seasons alongside Anderson, the first three at St. Thomas Aquinas. During his time with Coach Anderson, Bonacum has been responsible for offensive game planning, skill development, film analysis and team operations. In his three seasons at STAC - prior to this past year's remarkable tournament run by FDU - the Spartans posted a 67-12 record with ECC tournament championships and NCAA tournament appearances in each season and two trips to the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 round. Bonacum was an integral part of the skill development of NABC Division II All-American Grant Singleton and Demetre Roberts, a First Team All-Region and First Team All-ECC; two players also instrumental in Fairleigh Dickinson's successful 2022-23 campaign.

Prior to STAC, Bonacum served one season as a player development intern for the NBA's Dallas Mavericks in 2018-2019. His responsibilities included working with members of the coaching staff with an emphasis on player development, video and analytics, serving on the scout team for practices and gameday walkthroughs, charting and analyzing workouts for analytic and development groups and assisting with film study and breakdown of other NBA teams and players.

Bonacum was a 1,500+ point scorer for NCAA Division III Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey. His highly decorated career included a First Team All-American and All-District honors, first team selections for the NABC Atlantic Region, ECAC Metro All-Stars, All-MBWA and All-NJAC honoree. Bonacum was the 2015 NJAC Rookie of the Year and 2017 Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Year. As a senior, the Roadrunners appeared in the 2018 NCAA Division III Final Four. Bonacum started all 80 games he appeared in from his sophomore through junior campaigns.

He earned a degree in Business Administration from Ramapo in 2018.

"Tom has been with me now for five years," said Anderson. "He knows our system and our program as well as anyone does. He has a great feel for how to make players better and how to make our team reach our potential. I am thrilled to have Tom with us."

KAM MURRELL – ASSISTANT COACH

Murrell also served the last two seasons with Anderson at both STAC and FDU and played an additional two seasons for the Spartans from 2017-2019.

On the sidelines, Murrell helped lead FDU to the Northeast Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and two wins, including a First Four victory over Texas Southern and just the second No. 16-seed-over-a-No. 1 seed win in tournament history when the Knights took down Purdue. In 2021-22 STAC finished with a 28-5 overall record and an appearance in the 2022 NCAA Division II men's basketball tournament Sweet 16. Under Anderson, Murrell has served as a recruiter, an academic advisor and was responsible for scouting reports, travel, video coordination, skill development and strength and conditioning.

After concluding his career as a student-athlete, Murrell was a graduate assistant for two years at the University of Memphis, under head coach Penny Hardaway. At Memphis, Murrell assisted with opponent scouting, game film coding and the creation of player personnel videos. Additionally, he collaborated with the Tigers' analytics team to create statistical pre-game and post-game reports for coaching staff while also maintaining and monitoring the daily recruiting database for the program. The Tigers won the postseason NIT Championship in 2021.

Murrell played his final two seasons for Anderson at STAC, scoring nearly 500 points and averaging just under 10 points per game. He was team captain as a senior and helped lead the Spartans to NCAA Tournament appearances and the Sweet 16 in 2019. Murrell played two seasons for George Mason under newly minted Holy Cross head coach Dave Paulsen. As a scholastic athlete, the Long Beach, California, native played a postgraduate season at the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida following a career at Long Beach Poly.

He earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Management from STAC in 2019 and a master's degree in Sports and Hospitality from Memphis in 2021.

"Kam played for me and has coached with me for the last couple of years," said Anderson. "He has incredible experience and an incredible competitive fire and passion unlike any others. Kam will be a huge asset to our program."

PATRICK WALLACE – ASSISTANT COACH

Wallace comes to New Rochelle from Loyola University Chicago. He spent four seasons with the Ramblers, the first two as a video coordinator for Porter Moser and the last two as an assistant coach for Drew Valentine.

During his first three seasons at Loyola, he helped the program to two NCAA Tournament appearances, two Missouri Valley Conference Championship crowns and three seasons of 20 or more wins. In his final season he was instrumental in the Ramblers transition from the MVC to the Atlantic 10.

In 2021-22, his first as Division I assistant coach, Wallace was heavily involved with the team's offense that ranked as one of the top field goal and three-point shooting teams in the country. Loyola set a single-season program record for long distance makes and reached the NCAA Tournament once again, marking the first time in nearly 60 seasons that the Ramblers went dancing in back-to-back campaigns. Loyola posted 25 wins and captured a second straight MVC Championship title.
Prior to Loyola, Wallace spent two seasons from 2017-19  as a graduate manager on Chris Collins' staff at Northwestern University. As a graduate manager at Northwestern, he was responsible for game and scouting preparation, oversaw undergraduate managers and assisted in player development.

Wallace played collegiately at North Carolina State (2013-15) and Charleston Southern (2015-17). He was a member of two NCAA tournament teams and a Sweet 16 appearance with a victory over No. 1 overall seed Villanova in 2015. He finished his career at Charleston Southern ranked 15th in program history with 117 three-point field goals, despite playing just two seasons. Wallace was a two-time Big South All-Academic and NABC Honors Court member in both of his seasons in Charleston.

A Charlotte, North Carolina native, Wallace played prep basketball at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. He earned his undergraduate degree from Charleston Southern in 2017 and his master's degree in sports administration from Northwestern in 2019.

"I've known Pat for a couple years now and I am very excited to add him to our staff," said Anderson. "He brings experience and tremendous work ethic and passion to our program."

RAY SAVAGE – DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Savage also comes to New Rochelle from Fairleigh Dickinson and will continue to serve in the director of operations role for the Gaels.

While at FDU, Savage was responsible for gameday, practice and off-court basketball operations - including travel and logistics.

Savage joined Anderson's staff at Fairleigh Dickinson after two seasons at Georgia Highlands College, an NJCAA Division I program in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Savaged played a role in recruiting, evaluating prospects and on-campus recruiting duties, monitored academic progress of the student-athletes, developed scouting reports for opponents and self-scouting reports. Savage helped develop four Division I players in two seasons.

Prior to his stint in Northwest Georgia, Savage spent one season as assistant director of operations at Fordham University in 2019-20 under head coach Jeff Neubauer. He managed gameday and practice setup/breakdown for men's basketball, team meals, day-to-day video operations and supervised the program's student-managers.

Savage attended the College of Staten Island and earned a degree in business in 2019. His coaching career began during his season as an assistant coach at St. Joseph by the Sea High School, a CSHAA A-League program. He was a four-year varsity football and boys' basketball player in his native Staten Island.

"Ray has a tremendous feel for how our program operates," said Anderson. "On a day-by-day basis he will be a huge part of everything we do. His organizational skills are second-to-none."
