Iona Water Polo Earns Victory Over VMI

Box Score VILLANOVA, PA – Iona women's water polo program easily handles the Keydets of VMI Friday night to improve to 13-10 and 5-4 in the MAAC. 11 different Gaels found the back of the net in the 22-7 victory with Both freshman Lola Trujilo, Jenna Handali and grad student Sydney Brightenburg score four each.

The Keydets kept it a close game after the first quarter but Iona had a 4-3 lead behind first quarter goals from Karsyn Stewart, Brightenburg, Handali, and Trijulo. Iona's offense exploded in the second quarter, out scoring the opposition 7-1. Goals came from all over the place, Mia Tovar and Trujilo had two each, while Brightenburg, Handali added one more each and Malia Nagule joined in on the fun.

Coming out of the halftime break both sides of the pool did not let up with the offense putting another five on the board and the defense holding the Keydets to just one goal for the second quarter in a row. Amelia Gonzalez and Kaya Hart scored their first of the game, while Trujilo and Brightenburg added to their totals.

The fourth quarter was not much different than the first three, with the Gaels out scoring VMI 6-2. Molly Banks and Elizbeath Lovat joined the goal scorers in the final 8 minutes. Other goals in the fourth quarter came from the arms of Handali and Trujillo.

Iona finishes the Easter weekend with one more game tomorrow at 12:30 against the Seahawks of Wagner.
