Iona Water Polo Goes 2-2 Over Opening Weekend

VILLANOVA, PA - In the opening weekend of the 2024 season the Iona Women's Water Polo went 2-2 over four games played at Villanova University. Iona won over Gannon and MercyHurst and fell to Villanova and Mount St. Mary's.

IONA 16 GANNON 9

Iona outscored Gannon in all four quarters in their first win of the 2024 season. The Gaels were led on offense by Mia Tovar and Jenna Handali with four goals each. Lola Trujillo added three goals herself and four assists for a team high seven points, while also winning all four swim-offs. The rest of the goals came from Sadie Sallas (2), Kaya Hart (1), Isabella Adams (1), and Iona newcomer Lily Graham (1). The Gaels scored 16 goals on 34 shots and assisted on 13 of them. 

On the defense the team recorded 13 steals and drew 11 kick outs. In net for the Maroon and Gold was Lilly Morris in the first half making five saves on nine shots faced. She added one steal. Freshman Zaha Soler played the second half notching six saves on 12 shots faced, she also helped out the offense with two assists.

IONA 8 VILLANOVA 10

In the second game of the opening day of the season Iona fell to Villanova by two goals after a slow offensive start in the second half. Iona scored eight goals on 30 shots with sophomore Trujillo leading the Gaels with four goals and two assists and winning all four swim-offs for the second day in a row. Sadie Sallas, Bella Morquecho, Isabella Adams, and Jenna Handali added one goal each. As a team the Maroon & Gold drew nine kick outs and assisted on seven of the eight goals. 

Both goalies split time against Villanova with Morris playing the first half again, she made three saves on nine shots, and added two steals. Soler made eight saves in the second half on 14 shots faced, she also added two steals. As a team the Gaels stole the ball 12 times and had three blocks.   

IONA 18 MERCYHURST 3

12 different Gaels found the back of the end in the win over Mercyhurst. Iona was led by Sadie Sallas with three goals, Trujillo, Remy Ickes, Addison Collins, and Maleah Penman each scored twice. Tovar, Amelia Gonzalez, Handali, Adams, Williams, Hart, and Morquecho added one apiece. Trujillo stayed perfect 13-for-13 on swim-offs during the first three games. Iona assisted on all but two goals. 

In the first half in net for the Maroon & Gold Lily Morris faced 10 shots making five saves, She recorded two of the team's eight steals. In the second half Soler faced 13 shots and made 11 saves her season high. Iona was ejected six times while drawing 12 kick-outs. 

IONA 10 MOUNT ST. MARY'S 13

In game four of the weekend the Gaels fell short to fellow MAAC opponent Mount St. Mary's 10-13. Iona was led by Bella Morquecho with her first hat trick of the season. Other goals came from Sallas (2), Trujillo (2), Handali (2), and Tovar (1). Iona assisted on seven goals, and drew 13 kick-outs. Sophomore Trujillo kept her streak alive winning all four swim-offs. 

Once again Morris and Soler split time with Morris in the first half and Soler in the second. Morris faced 11 shots making five saves and a lone steal. In the second half Soler faced 13 shots making four saves. As a team the Gaels recorded nine steals and one block.

Iona is back in action on Feb 17 at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, IN. Iona will battle Salem and Indiana.
