Iona MBB Battles Rice In 70-66 Loss

NASSAU, BAHAMAS - The Iona University men's basketball team dropped a hard fought 70-66 decision to Rice University in its final contest of the 2024 Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship. Freshman Adam Njie Jr. and junior James Patterson had 19 points apiece in the loss.

THE RUNDOWN

A battle for 40 minutes, a combined 49 foul calls including eight first half technical fouls highlighted a contest that featured 10 tie scores and three lead changes and a scoring margin that did not get higher than seven points throughout the contest. After falling behind by seven with less than four minutes remaining, Iona used a 6-0 run late to cut the deficit to 64-63 but could not get any closer. An Njie three pointer with time running out made the final margin.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Njie scored his 19 points and 8-for-14 shooting and a 3-for-4 effort from long distance. He added two assists in 33 minutes.
  • Patterson returned to the lineup after missing the first two games in Nassau and posted 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds and four steals.
  • Senior Dejour Reaves added 10 points with two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Freshman Justin Menard added eight points and a steal in 25 minutes of the bench.
  • Junior Yaphet Moundi had five rebounds and two steals while graduate Jalen Barr posted four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

THE OPPONENT

  • Three Owls scored 10 or more led by their top scorer Trae Broadnax' 16 points. He used a 10-for-12 effort from the free throw line and had seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Caden Powell had 14 points and seven rebounds while Alem Huseinovic posted 10 points and had two steals.

TEAM STATS

  • Rice outshot Iona 45.7%-35.5%. The Gaels held an 8-3 advantage from long distance.
  • The Owls outrebounded Iona 36-32. Iona had 17 offensive boards to Rice's 10, though the Owls held a 17-10 second change point lead.
  • Rice had six assists and 19 turnovers while Iona posted eight assists and 15 giveaways. The Owls took advantage with a 23-13 advantage off turnovers.
  • The American Athletic Conference foe posted a 25-for-29 effort from the free throw line while the Gaels went 14-for-20.

UP NEXT

The Gaels take a break from non-conference play with two MAAC contests next weekend. Iona travels to Sacred Heart Friday and hosts Saint Peter's Sunday.
