Iona MBB Falls at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona University men's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart 83-59 in its 2024-25 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season opener at the Pitt Center. The Gaels faced a large halftime deficit and could not come back in the defeat. Senior Dejour Reaves led Iona with 17 points.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Reaves tallied 12 of his 17 points in the second half. For the game he shot 7-for-16 from the field while adding four rebounds and an assist.
  • Junior James Patterson scored eight points, four rebounds and two assists.
  • Rookie Josh Michigan poured in a season-best eight points, shooting 4-for-4 from the field with three rebounds and an assist.
  • Junior Yaphet Moundi added five points and a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Freshman Justin Menard posted a team-high four assists.

THE OPPONENT

  • Sacred Heart was led by 18 points from Anquan Hill. He also posted seven rebounds.
  • Bryce Johnson had 14 points and six boards.
  • Amiri Stewart netted 13 points with seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
  • Mekhi Conner had a team-best eight assists while Raymond Espninal-Guzman led with eight rebounds.

TEAM STATISTICS

  • Iona was out shot 49.1%-36.7% in the game. Sacred Heart connected on 10-of-24 from long distance while Iona was just 3-for-14.
  • The Pioneers held a 37-35 advantage on the boards.
  • The Gaels posted 14 assists and 19 turnovers while the home team had 18 assists and 16 giveaways.
