Iona Baseball Falls in Final Game at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va.— The Iona University baseball team concluded its weekend series with Longwood, with a 15-8 defeat on Sunday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
 
The Maroon & Gold posted 10 hits for the second straight game. Sophomores Josiah Ragsdale registered two hits and drove in four runs in back-to-back games for the Gaels. Sophomore Anthony Zollo recorded two hits and two runs scored.

GAME SUMMARY

Zollo reached base in the top of the third with a one-out bunt single to third. He swiped second base on the next pitch. Ragsdale then lined a double to the gap in right center for the 1-0 lead.
 
Longwood responded in the bottom of the frame with five runs to jump out in front, 5-1.
 
Both teams crossed the plate in the fifth inning as Ragsdale scored on a wild pitch and the Lancers picked up a two-out single to left field.
 
After a scoreless sixth inning, Longwood broke the game open with nine runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Iona opened the top of the ninth with a double by redshirt freshman Christian Mote. Back-to-back singles from redshirt freshman Jordan Overton and sophomore Nickolas Mora. Zollo made it four straight hits to start the inning with an RBI single to left field. Ragsdale cleared the bases with a three-run double to center field. Junior Jayson Gonzalez drove in the final run of the game on an RBI single to right center to bring the final score to 15-8.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

Ragsdale recorded his third multi-hit game of the season and drove in multiple runs for the fourth time this season.
Zollo posted multiple hits in all three games this weekend.
Senior Alex Hunt, junior Robert Lasbury and sophomore Julian Velazquez logged scoreless innings in relief.
Sophomore starter Michael Lorenzetti fanned six batters in four innings in the start for the Gaels. 

UP NEXT

Iona will head to Navy for a weekend series at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium. The series begins on Friday, March 1 with a 4 p.m. first pitch.
