ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Iona University baseball team earned its first win of the season on Friday evening, defeating Navy, 8-4 in the series opener. The Gaels utilized a six-run third inning, and the bullpen pitched a scoreless final four and two thirds to secure the victory.

Jayson Gonzalez drove in three runs for the Maroon & Gold on a two-run double and solo home run. Freshman
Carter Groen recorded a 2-for-3 showing with a solo home run and a double. Sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale posted his third straight multi-hit game.
GAME SUMMARY
Navy used two-out hitting in the bottom of the first inning with a one-run single up the middle and a double to left center for the 2-0 lead.
Groen led off the third inning by connecting on a 3-2 fastball and sending over the wall in left center to get Iona on the scoreboard. Junior
Carson Cahoy picked up a one-out single up the middle then Ragsdale recorded a ground rule double with two outs to left field. Gonzalez cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to give the Gaels a 3-2 lead. A walk gave Iona two runners on and both runners would come around to score on a fielding error in left field. Junior
Anthony Febo pushed the lead to 6-2 on an RBI single to left field.
The Midshipmen scratched one-run back in the bottom half of the third on a two-out hit by pitch with the bases loaded, Iona escaped trouble with an inning ending lineout to short. Navy pushed the score to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to center field. With runners on second and third, junior starter
Andrelys Payamps struck out the side to end the inning.
Gonzalez continued his strong day at the dish in the top of the fifth as he led off the inning by roping a 1-2 offering down the left field line for the home run and 7-4 lead.
Freshman JC Frias capped the scoring in the top of the eighth with a two-out RBI double to right field to bring the final to 8-4.

Nick Chiaia and senior Alex hunt closed out the final four and two third innings, surrendering just three hits and three walks.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- The top three batters in the order registered five hits and batters six through nine also recorded five hits.
- Gonzalez logged his second multi-hit game of the season and drove in a season-high three runs.
- Groen recorded his first career multi-hit game and his first collegiate home run.
- Ragsdale has had two hits in each of the last three games for the Gaels.
- Payamps fanned four batters in 4.1 innings of work for his first win of the season.
