Iona Baseball Beats Holy Cross, 5-3 For Series Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — An eighth inning two-run home run to left center by graduate student Garret Gray broke a tie ball game as the Iona University baseball team defeated Holy Cross, 5-3 at City Park. The Gaels earn the second weekend series win of the season with the finale victory on Sunday.
 
Gray led the Maroon & Gold with two runs batted in with the pivotal long ball. Senior James Kemp, graduate student Jim Pasquale and junior Carson Cahoy posted multiple hits in the win.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona got going in the bottom of the third as Cahoy led off the frame with a single and then stole second base. He advanced into scoring position on a groundout by sophomore Anthony Zollo. Sophomore Josiah Ragsdale would drive him in on a sacrifice fly to center field for the first run of the game. Junior Jayson Gonzalez then reached on a hit by pitch. Kemp roped a double to the gap in right center to score Gonzalez and give the Gaels the 2-0 lead.
 
Holy Cross punched back in the next half inning, getting runners on second and third with one out. A two-run ground rule double to right center tied the game up at 2-2.
 
The Crusaders grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth as a leadoff triple came around to score on a one-out sacrifice fly to center field for the 3-2 advantage.  
 
Iona looked to tie the game in the bottom of the frame as Ragsdale singled then advanced to third after a steal and overthrow at second base. He attempted to score on a slow dribbler at third, but Holy Cross made the play at the plate to escape trouble.
 
Pasquale led off the seventh with a triple down the right field line for the Gaels. Cahoy hit the long sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Pasquale and tie the game up 3-3.
 
Holy Cross had the go-ahead run on third with two outs in the eighth inning, but junior Matt Zguro escaped trouble with a strikeout to end the inning.
 
Freshman Carter Groen picked up a one-out walk in the bottom of the eighth. Gray then stepped to the plate and launched a shot over the wall in left center for the 5-3 lead.
 
The Crusaders threatened one last time in the ninth with runners on first and second with two outs but Zguro slammed the door with a strikeout looking to end the game and give the Gaels the win.

  • Iona outhit Holy Cross nine to six in the finale.
  • Kemp posted his second straight multi-hit game and his fourth of the season.
  • Cahoy registered back-to-back multi-hit games against the Crusaders.
  • Pasquale recorded two hits in a game for the second time this season.
  • Gray drove in a pair of runs for the third time this season and hit his first home run as a member of the Maroon & Gold.
  • Sophomore Michael Lorenzetti logged a season-high six innings pitched in the no decision.
  • Zguro logged two scoreless frames to end the game, surrendering just one hit and two walks while striking out three batters.

UP NEXT

The Gaels make the trip to Staten Island on Tuesday, March 19 for a 3 p.m. contest against Wagner at SIUH Community Park.
