QUEENS, NY — The Iona University baseball team suffered a 14-1 setback on Tuesday evening to St. John's at Jack Kaiser Stadium. It was the first local midweek game for the Maroon & Gold after opening the season down south.
GAME SUMMARY
St. John's playing in front of its home crowd for the first time this season, started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on a one-out single to right field and a successful first-and-third rundown with the lead runner scoring from third base for a 2-0 advantage.
The Gaels were held to just one hit through the first two innings, with a first inning single by sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale. Iona got momentum going in the top of the third as redshirt-freshman
Jordan Overton led off the inning with a single to left field. He would advance to second on a wild pitch. A walk to junior
Carson Cahoy put two runners on with one-out. Overton would come around to score from second on a throwing error at shortstop for the lone Iona run.
St. John's extended its lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits. The Big East foe broke the game open the sixth utilizing six hits and an Iona error to score nine runs to bring the final total to 14-1.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Ragsdale extended his hitting streak to 10 games to open the season. His two-hit game was the sixth multi-hit game of the season.
- Graduate student Jim Pasquale, senior James Kemp and Overton had the three other hits for the Gaels.
- Sophomore right hander Andrew Gaines made the start for Iona, surrendering two earned runs, two walks and striking out five in two innings of work.
- Junior Robert Lasbury logged two scoreless innings of relief, yielding just one walk, and striking out three batters.
