SMITHFIELD, RI — The Iona University baseball team dropped a back-and-forth contest to Bryant, 4-3 on a walk off wild pitch in the series opener at Conaty Park on Friday afternoon.

Josiah Ragsdale led the Maroon & Gold with two hits including a triple and two runs scored. Graduate students
Garret Gray,
Jim Pasquale and senior
James Kemp all posted a hit and a run batted in for Iona.
GAME SUMMARY
Ragsdale earned a one-out walk to get Iona started in the top of the first. He would swipe both second and third to get in scoring position with two outs. Gray drove him in with a ground rule double to left field for the 1-0 lead.
Bryant began the bottom of the third inning with a walk and double to right field to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly to centerfield knotted things up at 1-1. Junior
Andrelys Payamps struck out two batters to escape the inning and limit the Bryant inning.
Kemp reached first on a fielding error in right field to start the top of the fourth. After a strikeout he would advance into scoring position on a passed ball. Pasquale drove him in on a single to center field for the 2-1 lead.
Both offenses were quite for the next few innings before Bryant started the bottom of the seventh with a single and hit by pitch. The Bulldogs advanced both runners on a sac bunt before Iona grabbed the first out. A triple down the right field line gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Junior
Eric Gialloreto ended the inning with a strikeout looking as Iona evaded further damage.
The Gaels immediately responded in the top of the eighth as Ragsdale picked up a one-out triple to left field. Junior
Jayson Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to give Iona runners at the corners. Kemp came to the plate and executed a perfect squeeze bunt for Ragsdale and tie the game at 3-3. With runners at first and second, Bryant ended the inning with a strikeout and check swing groundout.
Bryant went down in order in the bottom of the eighth as senior
Alex Hunt struck out the side. Redshirt-freshman
Jordan Overton reached safely on an error by at first base and advanced all the way to second to lead off the ninth. Iona was unable to capitalize as a pair of strikeouts and a groundout ended the frame.
The Bulldogs got a base runner on with a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth. The winning run would advance to second on a flyout to left field before an intentional walk by the Gaels. A wild pitch by Hunt advanced both runners into scoring position. Another pitch that bounced in front of the plate, got away from the Gaels to the third base side allowing the winning run to score and give the home team the 4-3 win.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Ragsdale extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games to begin the season. He has posted multiple hits in six of the last seven contests. Ragsdale has scored twice in three games this season for the Gaels.
- 4-5-6 in the Iona order consisting of Kemp, Gray and Pasquale all recorded a hit and drove in a run for the Maroon & Gold.
- Payamps surrendered one run on two hits and five walks while striking out five batters in five innings for the no decision.
