BROOKVILLE, NY — The Iona University baseball team had its six-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday afternoon, falling 8-2 to LIU at LIU Baseball Stadium. The Maroon & Gold tallied 11 hits in the setback to the Sharks.
Sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale led the Gaels with three hits including a third inning solo home run. Redshirt freshman
Jordan Overton registered two hits and a run scored.
GAME SUMMARY
LIU struck first in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs on two hits and an Iona error to take the early lead.
Ragsdale got the Gaels on the scoreboard in the next half inning with a lead off home run over the right field fence.
The Sharks grabbed another run in the bottom of the third on a two-out single to right field for the 4-1 lead.
LIU broke the game open in the fourth inning, capitalizing on five hits and an error to score four runs to cap the team's scoring.
Ragsdale led off the fifth inning for Iona with a walk. Graduate student
Jim Pasquale followed with a single to center field. After a fly out to center, junior
Anthony Febo loaded the bases with a single to center field. Overton drove in Ragsdale from third with a sacrifice fly to center field. LIU escaped trouble with an inning ending strikeout.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the final three innings of play giving the Sharks the 8-2 win and splitting the season series between the two metropolitan foes.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Ragsdale's third inning long ball was his team-leading fifth home run of the season. He registered three hits in a game for the second time this season and tallied his 18th multi-hit game.
- Overton recorded the first multi-hit game of his career.
- Pasquale and sophomore Anthony Zollo both extended their hitting streaks to eight straight games with a base knock against the Sharks.
- Junior Joey Kasper logged a scoreless two and two thirds of relief for the Gaels.
- Junior Carl Kuentzel and redshirt sophomore Nick Chiaia also recorded a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.
