Iona Baseball Defeated in Series Opener at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. — The Iona University baseball team dropped game one of its three game series to Quinnipiac, 12-3 on Friday afternoon at Quinnipiac Baseball Field. 

GAME SUMMARY

Junior Jayson Gonzalez got on base via a one-out walk before advancing to second on a balk. After a groundout for the second out, senior James Kemp stepped to the plate and lined an RBI double down the right field line for the first run of the game. Freshman Carter Groen followed with an RBI single up the middle for the 2-0 lead.
 
Quinnipiac responded in the bottom of the inning with a lead off home run and one-out RBI double down the right field line to tie the game at 2-2. The Bobcats tacked on two runs in the second and third innings to take control of the game.
 
Iona got back on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning courtesy of a two-out double to left field by Groen.
 
The home team punched back with three runs on four hits to halt any momentum for the Gaels. Quinnipiac added another run in the sixth inning and two in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
 
Iona was outhit 12-8 by the Bobcats on Friday afternoon. Seven of the nine batters in the starting lineup recorded a hit for the Gaels. Groen led the Maroon & Gold with two hits for his fifth multi-hit game of the season. His two runs batted in was his fourth multi-RBI game of the season.

The series between the Gaels and Bobcats continues tomorrow afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. start at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
