Iona Baseball Comes Up Short in Matchup at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. — The Iona University baseball team came up short in its second game of the weekend series at Quinnipiac by a final score of 9-5 at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
 
Junior Jayson Gonzalez and sophomore Josiah Ragsdale led the Maroon & Gold with two hits apiece. Graduate student Jim Pasquale and freshman Carter Groen both recorded two-run home runs for the Gaels.

GAME SUMMARY

Quinnipiac attacked early capitalizing on three hits two hit by pitches and a walk to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
 
Iona punched back in the next half inning as senior James Kemp led off the second inning with a walk. Pasquale stepped to the dish and roped a two-run shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit to one, 3-2.
 
A one-out RBI infield single in the bottom of the frame pushed the Bobcats advantage back to two.
 
Gonzalez got the Gaels going in the third inning with a two-out double to the gap in right center. Groen was next to the plate and delivered his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field to knot things up at 4-4.
 
Quinnipiac regained the lead in the bottom of the third courtesy of a lead off home run to left field.
 
Iona answered in the top of the fourth as Pasquale led off the inning with a walk. He would make his way to third base with two outs in the frame as sophomore Anthony Zollo reached on a throwing error. Sophomore Nickolas Mora tied things up once again with an RBI single through the left side. The Gaels continued the inning with a walk by Ragsdale to load the bases, but Quinnipiac escaped trouble with a flyout to left field.
 
The momentum carried over for the Bobcats as the home team tacked on a run in the next four innings to take hold of the game and bring the eventual final to 9-5.
 
Iona had runners in scoring position with two outs in both the sixth and ninth innings but were denied by Quinnipiac.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Ragsdale recorded his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Saturday was the ninth multi-hit game of the season for Gonzalez.
  • Groen connected on his third home run of the season to tie the team lead.
  • Pasquale's two-run shot in the second inning was the seventh home run of his career.

The series between the two teams concludes tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
