HAMDEN, Conn. — The Iona University baseball dropped its series finale to Quinnipiac, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon. The Gaels held a one run lead late before a three-run rally by the Bobcats in the eighth inning flipped the game.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona led off the game with sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale reaching base on a catcher's interference and junior
Jayson Gonzalez getting hit by a pitch. Both runners executed a double steal and an overthrow to third allowed Ragsdale to score for the early 1-0 lead. The Gaels had runners on first and third as freshman
Carter Groen earned a walk, but the Bobcats escaped trouble on a double play and ground out to end the inning.
The Bobcats answered in the bottom of the inning, utilizing a one-out RBI infield single and a sacrifice fly to right field to jump ahead, 2-1.
After a scoreless second inning, Ragsdale led off the third with a single through the right side and stolen base. Gonzalez knotted the game back up with an RBI single through the left side. Quinnipiac secured the first two outs in the infield before senior
James Kemp stepped to the plate. He sent the 3-2 pitch back up the middle to score Gonzalez and give the Gaels a 3-2 lead.
Quinnipiac tied the game back up in the fourth inning on a one-out sacrifice fly to center field.
Sophomore
Nickolas Mora recorded a two-out single in the sixth inning for the Gaels. He advanced to third on a fielding error that allowed Ragsdale to reach first base. A passed ball allowed Mora to score and give Iona back the lead, 4-3.
The Bobcats looked to rally in the bottom of the eighth, getting runners on first and second with two outs. A two-run triple gave the home team back the lead and an RBI single to second base followed push the score to 6-4. The Gaels were retired in order in the ninth to give Quinnipiac the series sweep.
